There are four basic types of seismic sensor (sometimes generically referred to as receivers in exploration geophysics):

Seismometer
precision instruments not used in seismic exploration
Geophone
used in land seismic acquisition; small, cheap, and intended for rapid deployment in large numbers
Hydrophone
piezoelectric sensors for deployment in the water column
MEMS accelerometer
micro-electro-mechanical systems are an alternative to coil-based geophones
